Emma Wells

Registered Nutritional Therapist

I have been busy founding smartnutrition.co.uk, smartsibotest.com and working with smartsupplementshop.co.uk and after seeing clients for 18 years I thought it was time I had a dedicated clinic website and here it is. I hope you like it.

I have a specialist interest in digestive health bought about after years of antibiotic use as a child, getting a parasite infection – giardia – whilst travelling in India resulting in my digestion and immune system badly misbehaving and having my first symptoms of MS when I was 21, later diagnosed at 29. I worked out years before the recent ‘new’ research became mainstream that the gut was key to immune function and that something had gone drastically wrong and that by changing what I ate and how I lived could manage my autoimmune condition despite my neurologist advising me to not be ridiculous and eat what I want or I’d be miserable. So I chose to live by living well, eating well and looking after my digestion, Immune system and wellbeing and I endeavor to focus on my work-life balance as part of my personal health and wellness plan.
I studied nutrition and cemented my beliefs with science and qualified in 2001, 21 years ago, from the Institute for optimum nutrition. I completed my full functional medicine qualification and certification from the Institute of Functional Medicine in 2021.  Despite my autoimmune label I have stayed well whilst helping thousands of people including former cabinet ministers (MEP’s), West end musical and pop stars. I have advised Saatchi & Saatchi, Mclaren and Unilever amongst others. I previously worked alongside Carol Caplin at her Lifesmart gym and with Michael Franklin and his IBS and gut disorders centre.

Keeping up to date…

In 2021 I qualified with full certification form the Institute of Functional Medicine.

I am often seen walking along Brighton seafront in the morning, headphones on – I’m usually listening to a SIBO conference or lecture on digestive health – it’s a good time for me to be able to focus when I’m away from the phone and email. I attend the yearly SIBO conferences and keep up to date with the latest research and evolving thinking. I have also had private mentoring with SIBO world expert Alison Siebecker and have some shared pod casts with Alison that you can see here.

In the past I lectured widely for 12 years at four of the top UK Nutrition colleges covering digestive health and testing, stress, Food Allergy and intolerance, men’s health as well as many other
subjects.

For many years I observed student clinics and students observing my clinics and became the clinic director of the college of naturopathic nutrition enabling their course to be accredited by the industry body NTC.

I used to write for many national magazines such as Men’s Health, Zest, Allergy, Cook vegetarian, Country walking and more and I’ve also appeared as an expert nutrition source on TV and radio along with writing some chapters in Hazel Courtney’s 500 of the most important health tips you will ever need.

Since qualifying in 2001 I enjoy helping people to improve their health, increase their energy and vitality, achieve their goals and feel positive about the future.

Importantly I work with a high degree of integrity, confidentiality and respect when dealing with individuals and understand the psychological as well as physical difficulties and challenges a chronic health condition can bring. I am a good listener with a heap of empathy but also have skills that enable me to build your unique jigsaw puzzle that makes up your health picture and move through the stages required to address imbalances – Often with me or my team but if necessary I will also refer you to a health professional for further investigation should it be appropriate.
